Gil,reference the lad who died in Greece,on his way back to Volos tented camp.I'm almost positive he was a 3 Para lad.He died from choking on his own vomit,& his body was discovered on the road leading to camp.3 Para
also suffered another incident whereby someone handed in a loaded Pistol
to the Arm's store,& the Arm's Store-man accidentally shot himself with it !!Not sure if it was fatal,or just wounded ??!As with the Kiel Canal,NOT a
good exercise for 3 Para !!!!

Some info from "Auld Tam Simpson" ex A Coy. out in Brisbane.

Tom is not 100% sure (Is anyone our age?)

The bloke who died in Greece (on the Athens R&R trip) was a Scot, Pte. McTavish (see photo) McTavish L Auld Tam R.

A Pte "Ginge"Grundy died in an RTA approx 1960 in Cyprus. see photo.

A Pte. Green was Killed in in an accident involving helicopter blades 1962-62 could be Cyprus or when we came back to Bahrain after Kuwait trip. ( I think Tom may have got this confused with the Pte. Green who was killed in the Wessex crash in Borneo, maybe not) NB All pers were A Coy.

Yes you are right there mucker. Private 23887756 R.G.GREEN aged 25 years, 2 PARA, died at Nanga Gaat, when two Wessex's collided on the 12th April 1965.
He is buried at Kranji Cemetary Section 11.

I've posted this info twice but it seems to disapear into the ether..

I'v had some info from Auld Tam Simpson ex A Coy ex 22SAS. Tom is not 100% certain but then again no one is at our age. As far as he can recall, Fatalities in 2Para 1959-63.

1) Pte. Ginge Grundy died in RTA. in Cyprus 1959/60.

2) Pte McTavish died in Greece,choked on own vomit after a drinks session on beach nr Athens. 1963

3) Pte. Green killed as a result of coming into contact with helicopter blades, either Cyprus or Bahrain 1962-63. ( Tom might be confusing this with the Pte. Green that died in the Wessex crash in Borneo...maybe not.)

All were from A Coy...see attached photos.

Aye I took the Photos in Malaya and Borneo last year on our "All our Yesterdays trip" with 22 SAS regimental assoc.

I certainly have Pte 23661842 Ronald GRUNDY aged 20 killed 11/6/1961 buried at Dhekelia Cemetary Cyprus Sec 5 Row B, Grave 2. His name is also on the Arboretum for your information.

In respect of the the second one I only have one Mc which is John Alexander McIntosh aged 18 killed on the 18/6/1967 buried in Silent Valley Cemetary Aden Section 6 Grave 645. No McTavish recorded anywhere as PARA Reg are you sure he was in our lot, as if he died IN SERVICE in PARA Reg I would have it down on my list as to where he was buried? I have also cross referenced his name onto the Arboretum Records and mine No Trace sadly. It could have been missed by the HQ wallers at the time in sending off the record though!!

In respect of Robert George GREEN it is the only one on my GRAVEWATCH records recorded as above killed in the helicopter crash at Nanga Gaat.

Re McTavish Auld Tam wasn't too sure if it was him in Greece, I've contacted other 2 Para blokes "Bev" Beveridge & Andy Brown to see if they remembers anything. I'll contact Tam again to ascertain if the name was McTavish& if he was 2Para, as per the photograph Tam came thru' the depot with him so he must be recorded somewhere.

64/65 and then transferred to a.a.c. I last heard of him around 1998 and
he had left the grog and had inherited his uncles house and a wad of cash.
Mac used to talk about tapping the uncle when on leave and £10 in 1962
seemed an outrageous amount to tap but it appeared to be in order. ( by
the way it was the wee blonde who was daft about him who verified every
thing) and she was still a fine looking woman then. I dont know if he is still
alive yet,so next time you are in Oban robbie check the phone book.

Thats why he's not logged on as PARA Reg. If he died IN SERVICE in PARA Reg or 16 AB Bde/16 AA he would be on my GRAVEWATCH list.

Bumped into McTavish in a pub in Oban more than a few years ago when
looking for a real ale outlet[in Scotland like rocky horse sh--]
He must have had something to do with the bar as, he pulled me my next pint[Youngers 80/- ale MMMMMM]and took me money for it !

Gil, Seen a photo of the resting place of Harry Patch right next to an Airborne Soldier, I couldn't make out the name out in the paper, But what a person to look after him... R.I.P. God bless them all.

Yes Taff, did a bit of research for Colin on that one and found out he was a driver attached to an Airborne Unit, looks like he died out of active service from his wounds as I lifted it from a casualty report in 1945, he has a civvy gravestone not a CWG one, but he has got our wings up so one must presume, he was PARA Reg:

Gil,the uy drowned in Malaysia was Steve Birchall he was with Adam Stott John Malloney and Taff Morgan,but found him long before we came home as I recall very clearly attending his funeral out there.

I nearly joined you all on that "Beachcoming" party, but Taff Loxton and I thought diving would be better on a distant island off Malaya, and it certainly was.......in fact it was best described as BRILLIANT.
