G'day lads, I was just now reading a fiction thriller involving "Conspiracy Theories" when a thought popped into my head ( I know-bags of room). B Coy were doing the quick move month at RAF Maharaq Bahrain, and going in for breakfast one morning the Cook said "President Kennedy has been assassinated"
My first rapid thoughts were
1) Sht WW 111 is going to kick in any minute now.
2) UK and Europe will go - along with my family and friends.
3) The fckng Ruskies have always wanted a warm water port and access to the gulf so 2 Para has got it coming big time !
It never happened of course but the Cold War was at it's height at that time and it seemed a feasible outcome to me
QUESTION Where were you ( For those born at that time !) when you got the news and what did you think?

It was the day when I joined my first Coy(A) at Jebel Ali
If memory serves me correctly the RAF Quick Move Coy would be next to fly out to Jebel Ali, the Jebel Ali Coy would fly back to Bahrain and C Coy would move to RAF Muharaq .
Has anyone seen the tarmac motorways around Dubai on TV , big sign posts to Jebel Ali etc!

Good day Trev. Hope that all is well with you and that your xmas was as good as mine. Hopefully am having a good New Year. Haven't been on the mountains for about 4 years following on from car accident and thought that I wasn't going up again. However a friend has expectations that we are going back up so am going to have to get rid of some of this accrued fat. Will be good to get up Cadair Idris which, although on my doorstep, I haven't been up. Bloody crazy....spent a fortnight on top of Jebel Akhdar thousands of miles away but haven't been up Cadair which is next door!!
Hope to see you in Feb......stay sane, Danny

I realise the I am a bit late with this but most of C Coy had jumped into Das Island that morning and were having their rations cook by C/Sgt (Name??] when the news came through
Working at Firestone tires, ten p.m. till six a.m. shift. Burns and grease all over my arms but, my, the money was good. We were taking a break when the news came on and couldn't believe it. I went to the States the next year for the first time and went to live there in 1965.
I was serveing in the CDN army in germany, their was a boxing match on CANADA/USA when the news came through about JFK, cancelled the match, (we were winning) but eveen more scarey was the cubin missle crisess, all NATO forces were deplyed to battle positions in germany, it was really scarey s...t time, as we NATO forces were suppose to only last 3 days, anyone who lived through the cubin crisess will remember S...TTHIS IS IT, anyone serving PARA REGT at the time.
In Nov 63 when JFK was assassinated, I was already in jpc, and that day thought; Why am I in Wales climbing mountains that even some Welshmen would not climb?
No in fact I couldn’t wait for the day that I could get into one of the Btn’s and be in man service. Having your bed turned over almost every night, wasn’t much fun. Not withstanding all the bullying, beastings and barrack room courts that were going on at that time. Couldn’t wait to go and fight the big bear. Yea right.
