The photo 106 was taken in 1961 at Mutlah Ridge...(scene of recent inter Arab animosity!!)
I know it was George "Punchy" Smith driving (Who would forget that face?) Who are/were the other 2.
Remember this incident?
The next photo was taken mid Med. In 1962 on our way to Tobruk in an LCT. for a field firing exercise...it was a rough crossing in a flat bottomed tub, when Frank Haygarth, Regt. Sigs elected to throw himself overboard! The Chinese crew refused to lower the boats to rescue him...as they reckon a person is entitled to top himself...possibly a Confucius opt out clause.
Anyhow we manned the boats and got to Frank before he went down for the 3rd time, I believe there were some support company manning the boat. When we got him aboard he wasn't best pleased...he said he intended to murder me!... ( I wonder to this day what I'd done to upset him) he was taken off at Tobruk in a straight jacket, flown to Nettley hospital had treatment and recovered well but was discharged...he was too bloody mad even for 2Para!

Rob. I was the support coy chap in the lifeboat .When he jumped overboard I was aft on the starboard side,Being ex merchant navy and knowing the drill I ran up to the Bridge pointing all the time back at him not to lose his position, when on the bridge the Ist officer ask me what the bl dy hell im doing on his bridge, I said man overboard 2 points off the starboard stern,he swung the compass on the gimlet onto my hand bearing and took the reading at the same time shouting at the AB on the wheel to bring her round on to his new heading.Then as you said a few of the crew would not man the lifeboat the sea was a bit choppy for them.What you failed to mention was that when they put him in a cabin he asked for a glass of water then spat it out because it was not salty,then he asked for a bowl of water then stood on the bunk and dived into it ,thats the point when he was restrained. never did know the guys name .Must be loseing my marbles because i thought it was the trip back from Lybia to Cyprus 31st oct.1960 the battalion was back in England summer 62.Have a nice day.
I may be wrong about the date I seem to remember it was after the Mutlah Ridge "Bloodbath"!! but I agree with you about Franks antics once we got him back on board and locked him in the brig up forard. Frank was a really nice quite guy a good mate and a good signaller, what set him off I'll never know, I went to his home town about 10 years ago to see if I could trace him but he had vanished hell knows where.
